The Benefice Choir
The Benefice Choir meets regularly at Sherborne church, usually on a Saturday or Sunday evening. We rehearse and sing for high days, holidays and other services throughout the benefice.
The choir welcomes everyone, regardless of musical ability or faith, and encourages all members to develop their abilities and contribute as singers or soloists. We sing a variety of music, ranging from renaissance madrigals to contemporary works written specially for the choir through a relationship with Trinity College of Music and the University of Bristol.
The choir also encourages contributions from instrumentalists. To date, violinists, flautists, trumpeters, trombonists, bassoonists, oboists and a drummers - many under 18 years old - have contributed.
We aim to enhance the church’s liturgy, produce concerts and provide a strong community focus,
through regular choir practices and social events.
Choir members who cannot commit to attending weekly are encouraged to join in simply whenever they are able. Average attendance is around 20, with over 40 people, aged 8 to 92, involved in big occasions. Recent concerts supporting youthful talent and commemorating World War One were well supported: the latter raised over £300 towards repairing Sherborne War Memorial!
Anyone who would like to join us is more than welcome! We understand that people are able to offer different levels of commitment, so the music planned for services is adapted depending on who is available.
